Google Opal is a visual builder from Google Labs, launched in public beta in the U.S. in late July 2025.
Opal was built with Breadboard. Breadboard is an open-source project created by Google employee Dimitri Glazkov.
Update: In February 2026, Google Labs added an agent step to Opal and also added three new tools:
- Memory – Remember information, such as a user’s name or your style preferences, across sessions.
- Dynamic Routing – Let the agent choose the next best step using the “@ Go to” tool.
- Interactive Chat – Initiate user interactions to gather missing information or present options before moving on.
People at organizations using Google Workspace can create simple agents without code.
Opal Overview
Opal was originally positioned as an AI mini-app builder. Users can build mini-apps with a combination of natural language and visual editing.
One approach is to start by writing a prompt for an app and then edit it with additional ‘Suggest an edit’ prompts or manually edit the steps (which themselves include prompts).
The builder’s current node categories are:
- User Input
- Generate
- Output
- Add Assets

Add Asset Options
The assets that can be added to an app are
- File uploads, including images
- Google Drive files
- YouTube videos
- Text
- Drawings
Generate Options
The model options under ‘Generate’, along with their descriptions, are
- Agent

Example App
Here’s a Google Opal business app we built in minutes called ‘Shadow IT Minimizer.’ It allows employees to determine whether any existing, IT-sanctioned software meets their requirements before tapping a credit card and adding to the shadow stack.
Shadow IT has cost and security implications for many organizations. A simple app like this could mitigate some of the risk.
